Avances para la reducción de la captura incidental de aves marinas en la pesca de cerco industrial en la zona del norte de Chile / Advances in the reduction of incidental capture of seabirds in industrial purse seine fishing in the northern area of ​​Chile

Desde comienzos del año 2020 WWF ha trabajado en conjunto a Oikonos y al Centro de Investigación Aplicada del Mar (CIAM) con el fin de mitigar y reducir la captura incidental de aves en operaciones de pesca de cerco industrial de anchoveta en el norte de Chile. La primera etapa de esta iniciativa estableció una hoja de ruta para avanzar en el establecimiento de acciones sistemáticas que lleven a adoptar esta tarea bajo acciones concretas, efectivas y medibles. Posterior a esto, se desarrolló una segunda etapa, en donde se determinaron sistemas y/o acciones para reducir la captura incidental que puedan ser probadas experimentalmente en operaciones de pesca. Cabe destacar que la metodología utilizada permitió articular instancias de participación de los diferentes actores y entrevistados que se relacionan directamente con la captura incidental de aves marinas, para así, lograr un trabajo en consenso, facilitando acuerdos que promuevan efectivamente la voluntad de implementar y probar de diferentes medidas y/o acciones que ayuden a reducir las interacciones entre las aves y las actividades de pesca.

Since the beginning of 2020, WWF has worked together with Oikonos and the Center for Applied Marine Research (CIAM) in order to mitigate and reduce the incidental capture of birds in industrial purse seine fishing operations for anchovy in northern Chile. The first stage of this initiative established a road map to advance in the establishment of systematic actions that lead to adopting this task under concrete, effective and measurable actions. After this, a second stage was developed, where systems and/or actions were determined to reduce bycatch that can be experimentally tested in fishing operations. It should be noted that the methodology used made it possible to articulate participation instances of the different actors and interviewees that are directly related to the incidental capture of seabirds, in order to achieve consensus work, facilitating agreements that effectively promote the will to implement and test different measures and/or actions that help reduce interactions between birds and fishing activities.
